I suspect your system is not woody but sarge or sid
if there is updmap.cfg ;-)

Anyway you can select from two cases:

- /var/lib/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg is automatically generated 
by update-updmap so it is placed under /var directory (so not 
a symlink of /etc/texmf/updmap.cfg).

- /var/lib/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg is a symlink of 
/etc/texmf/updmap.cfg but in this case updmap.cfg will 
not be updated automatically so you need to modify it 
appropriately by yourself.

The former is a default, standard, and recommended choice.

But /etc/texmf/updmap.cfg seems to cause confusion so
we will rename it if it is not used as I said
