And even more, or rather incompatibilities with new tetex? I had to
deinstall lmodern to be able to upgrade tetex-base. After upgrading
all tetex packages, I installed lmodern again without getting any
errors.

However, now the minimal file

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage{lmodern}

\begin{document}
ü
\end{document}

gives a blank page in xdvi, and dvips says:

frank@alhambra:~/latex/test/debian-tetex$ dvips lmodern.dvi
This is dvips(k) 5.92b Copyright 2002 Radical Eye Software (www.radicaleye.com)
' TeX output 2003.09.03:1339' -> lmodern.ps
kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode ljfour --bdpi 600 --mag 1+0/600 --dpi 600 cork-lmr10
mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for cork-lmr10.
kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.
dvips: Font cork-lmr10 not found, characters will be left blank.
<texc.pro>. [1]
frank@alhambra:~/latex/test/debian-tetex$

missfont.log contains:

mktexpk --mfmode ljfour --bdpi 600 --mag 1+0/600 --dpi 600 cork-lmr10
mktexpk --mfmode ljfour --bdpi 600 --mag 1+0/600 --dpi 600 cork-lmr10

Without \usepackage{lmodern}, it uses the cm-super fonts without
errors.

Thank you,
Frank
