Yes, that's something about TAB-to-space conversion that I don't
understand.

You're right, I overlooked this. We could rephrase the comment:

+    # If we add a default in the future, or somebody has added
+    # patterns in the buggy versions, there might be double
+    # occurences. we have to fish them out.
