I suspect easier way could be to change Templates titles
like

>  db_get tetex-bin/use_debconf || true

use_debconf => under_debconf (for example)

> -db_input medium tetex-bin/hyphen || true

hypen => hyphenation (for example)

Then no need to fiddle with flags?

But I'm afraid this is a kind of so called dirty trick.
