Bug#70668: I can't find the format file `pdflatex.fmt'!

Ugh. My mistake; I didn't realize your teTeX was so old.

So. If you can, try upgrading your teTeX packages. The current
versions of teTeX in potato and woody are

                 potato woody
-------------------------------------------
tetex-base 1.0-10 1.0.2+20000804
tetex-bin 1.0.6-7 1.0.7+20000807
tetex-dev 1.0.6-7 1.0.7+20000807
tetex-doc 1.0-10 1.0.2+20000804
tetex-extra 1.0-10 1.0.2+20000804
tetex-french n/a n/a
tetex-lib 1.0.6-7 1.0.7+20000807
tetex-src 1.0-1 1.0.2+20000804
tetex-nonfree 1.0-10 1.0.2+20000804
-------------------------------------------

If you have apt working, setting your /etc/apt/sources.list to
include a line like (but use your local mirror)

deb http://ftp.ca.debian.org/debian potato main contrib non-free

or

deb http://ftp.ca.debian.org/debian woody main contrib non-free

and typing apt-get install task-tex should remove your old
packages and install the new ones.

TeTeX has been pretty dramatically reorganized by Thomas Esser,
including dropping all of the (LaTeX) packages that aren't DFSG
free (the tetex-nonfree package is now just a placeholder).
That's not as scary as it sounds because most of the packages that
were in tetex-nonfree are now DFSG free, so they're in
tetex-extra.

If you have problems with the installation, make sure that you
don't have any TeX-related environment variables set in root's
environment (especially TEXMF). You may need to modify any TEXMF
variables in user shellrc files, and any scripts that assume the
texmf tree is in /usr/lib (it's now in /usr/share/texmf).

If you can't upgrade, then try taking a look at pdflatex.log.
Chances are good that there's something useful in there that would
help narrow the problem down a bit.
