Well /usr/share/texmf/source/latex/seminar/doc/sem-user.tex
says as follows;

\begin{MD}
  \overlay{n}
\end{MD}
puts whatever is in its scope (\TeX\ group) on overlay $n$, where

and generally this kind of sentence "whatever is in its scope
(\TeX\ group)" is an important signal that it is needed or at
least it is safe to use grouping for the command.

This is new information to me. Thanks for your advise and
I will try seminar.sty if it become compliant with LaTeX2e ;)
