Well, we use stable for servers (normally) not for final user, for that
reason, at the beginning the packages are up to date, their are (almost)
in the last version.

So, lenny became a stable version after 2 years (more or less), since
2006. And testing is (almost) stable, it's kind of rare that testing
version get broken.

As I said, stable is not for final user, try to use testing, and in that
way your Debian installation is going to be updated.
