Here is the problem.  The VIA device should be given index 0 so
that it becomes the default output device for programs that
send output to sound card #0 by default.

There are various ways to fix this problem, but the best one is
probably to install an alsa-modules package for your kernel
built from alsa-source using make-kpkg.  This will give you an
ALSA system wherein the snd-bt87x driver won't grab index 0.
