No sound in some programs after installing ALSA

Hi!

I did a fresh install of sarge snapshot from 20050225 with boot line "linux26".

Then I installed alsa-base and alsa-utils.

Now, there is sound in totem player, but xmms, alsaplayer and "play" all report errors.
I tried OSS/ALSA/eSound plugins in XMMS and they all report an error.
alsaplayer also tries OSS and ALSA and both fail.
"play" fails to open the OSS driver.

Any clues ?

HW is on board VIA 8235 with realtek ALC650 codec.
