unable to configure monitor in sarge

I netinstalled sarge with the 2.6.7 kernel today on a Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop using the default "desktop environment" option and without manually configuring my monitor.  Here's the monitor information from lspci:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 65x/M650/740 PCI/AGP VGA Display Adapter
The display show the upper-left of what it actually should be displaying twice in the top 2/3's of the screen and the bottom 1/3 is just noise.

I ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and changed the settings to those I got from Knoppix (which works fine on my machine) and lspci:

- VGA driver
- 28-96 for the horizontal and 50-75 for the vertical
- 1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480 for the allowable resolutions

This did not help.

What else should I do?

Thanks,

Brian
