update-alternatives and gcc

This has only become an issue with the recent gcc-3.3 packages
(i.e. kernel build fails), but I'm concerned that the gcc
packaging doesn't appear to follow the /etc/alternatives
standard. Currently (on an up-to-date Sid system),
/etc/alternatives/cc is a reference to /usr/bin/gcc which is
symlinked to /usr/bin/gcc-3.3. Would it not make more sense to
make the gcc versions directly visible to update-alternatives and
dispense with the symlink? I can work around this using makeflags
or changing the symlink, but this setup just doesn't seem to be
the "Debian Way".
