I have gcc-{2.95,3.2,3.3} all installed, so here is another case
that does not use /etc/alternatives,
$ ls -l /lib/cpp
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 Jun 1 14:10 /lib/cpp -> /usr/bin/cpp-3.3*
