The problem is possibly due to some apps using fc rather than xft. Look in
/etc/fonts/local.conf and fonts.conf. Take a look at the fontpaths denoted
by the <dir></dir> tags. If there are any fontpaths in your XF86Config-4
that aren't in fonts.conf, put them in local.conf.

I have a line in mine like this
<dir>/usr/lib/X11/fonts/ttfonts</dir>

which lets me use the fonts that I copied from THAT OTHER OS :-)
