Problem with iso-8859-x locales with woody

Hi,

I have a problem with all iso-8859 locales i tryed to set
on my debian woody install. They fail badly. Nonetheless,
there is no problem at all with UTF or japanese locales, so
it is a bit strange to me. I upgraded from potatoe to
woody about 6 month ago, and i had such problems since that
moment or soon after, as far as i remember.
Here is some abstracts of locale-def output:

[and so on...]

Problems also arise for iso-8859-15 (for fr_FR@Euro) so that all
iso-8859 locales are unsuable (ls provides only filenames like '????0??'
not very useful, and a number of shell commands break). I can only
use C-locale of japanese locales (but i am not yet good enough in
japanese to use it on a daily base). I have also some strange warning
messages for inexistant mime-support-compat file when i
apt-get upgrade things, some remaining ghosts of potatoe installation
it seems, but i guess it is quite benign and probably unrelated.
By the way, my hardware architecture is PowerPC if it matters.

I hope someone will have some clues about a missing package or
an incorrect setting that may cause this kind of annoyance.
I was looking for a solution for a few months without success so
far, so if noone has any idea, I guess it will be time for
a reinstallation from scratch.

Thank you for reading, anyway.
