However eventually the GRUB just dies with no clue what to do.
My suggestion would be to install using the netboot installer in Wheezy:

I think there is a ports mirror somewhere but it has been years since I
tried this :
You have to use archive.debian.org/debian and try to disable the GPG verification.

│ Debian archive mirror hostname: │
│ │
│ archive.debian.org________________________________________________ │
│
│
│ Debian archive mirror directory:
│
│
│
│
/debian/_____________________________________________________________ │

and then ...
│ Bad archive mirror
│
│ An error has been detected while trying to use the specified
Debian │
│ archive mirror.
│
│
│
│ Possible reasons for the error are: incorrect mirror specified;
│
│ mirror is not available (possibly due to an unreliable network
│
│ connection); mirror is broken (for example because an invalid
Release │
│ file was found); mirror does not support the correct Debian
version. │
│
│
│ Additional details may be available in /var/log/syslog or on
virtual │
│ console 4.
│
│
│
│ Please check the specified mirror or try a different one.
Not sure if there is an easy way to achieve that in the installer. I have to try
this myself first.
I scroll to the top of the mirror list and enter the info manually.
FWIW, there were discussions with the FTP team to generate new signatures for
archive.debian.org so that older Debian distributions can be installed without
signature verification problems.
Alternatively, you can try setting the clock back.
when all else fails .... however at the moment there is no functional
pkg mirror at all.
