However eventually the GRUB just dies with no clue what to do.

My suggestion would be to install using the netboot installer in Wheezy:

I think there is a ports mirror somewhere but it has been years since I tried this :

┌────────────┤ [!!] Choose a mirror of the Debian archive ├─────────────┐ │ The specified (default) Debian version (wheezy) is not available from │ │ the selected mirror. It is possible to continue and select a │ different release for your installation, but normally you should go │ │ back and select a different mirror that does support the correct │ version. │ Go back and try a different mirror? │ <Go Back> <Yes> <No> └───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
