lenny make-kpkg failure

I'm trying to build a 2.6.26 kernel because the current debian
kernel oops on shutdown and that oops is fixed in 2.6.26.

I get this strange error near the end of the build:

make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image
...
chmod -R og=rX /usr/src/sparc64/linux-2.6/debian/linux-image-2.6.26 chown -R root:root /usr/src/sparc64/linux-2.6/debian/linux-image-2.6.26 dpkg --build /usr/src/sparc64/linux-2.6/debian/linux-image-2.6.26 .. dpkg-deb: building package `linux-image-2.6.26' in `../linux-image-2.6.26_2.6.26-10.00.Custom_sparc.deb'. dpkg-deb: control directory has bad permissions 2755 (must be >=0755 and <=0775)
