The firmware mention is irrelevant, you get that even with working cards.
On a V240, I see the following on 2.6.18-4-sparc64 in the install system:

tg3: eth%d: Cannot get nvarm lock, tg3_nvram_init failed.
eth0: Tigon3 [partno(none) rev 2003 PHY(5704)] (PCI:66MHz:64-bit) 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet 00:03:ba:xx:xx:xx

tg3: eth0: No firmware running.

Maybe your problem is as simple as mine - the physical layout of those
cards doesn't match the numbering of the devices? I've got four, and
IIRC eth2 is the first one :)
