debian-31r0a-sparc-binary-x not booting correctly on SS20

My debian-31r0a-sparc-binary-1 CD image installs completely without error . On removing the CD and booting the install fails as follows:
calibrating delay loop
2 CPUs activated
kencpd 16 RAM disks of 8192k size
loading 2140 blocks in ram disk
memory 2140k freed
cramfs: wrong magic
Kernel panic:UFS unable to mount root fs on 00:12

I then do STOP A OK> boot
boot: Return
uncompressing image
Loaded kernel v.2.4.27
Load initial ram disk (2191360bytes at 0x3000000 phys, 0x6000000 virt)
PROMLIB:obia ranges 5
bootmem_init:scan sp-banks, init_bootmem (spfn[271], bpfn[271], mlpfn[c000])
free_bootmem:base[3000000] size[217000]
reserve_bootmem:base[3000000] size [217000]
reserve_bootmem: base[0] size[271000]
reserve_bootmem:base[271000] size[1800]
level 15 interrupt
>OK
I have tried several to get boot: to accept new memory sizes (ramdisk_size=16000 and mem-512M ) without success.
Do I have too much or too little memory?
Can someone advise me on the kernel panic and the memory problems?
Thanks
