I've had issues with the ESP controller in 2.6.xx before but do not
have access to the box on which it occurred in order to do anything
about the problem.
Might want to put the output of uname -a, prtconf -v (must be root),
and dmesg. From 2.4 since 2.6 OOPSes.
Also tell us about your disks if the dmesg output gives an incomplete
picture of their setup.
