Is there a reason you can't upgrade to sarge? An apt-cache search reveals xastir 1.3.2 is available as a .deb in Sarge, which would be much easier; as all of it's dependencies are met automatically. :-)

Provided your Sparc is a desktop machine for playing and not a server, which I would assume since you're trying to put an Xwindows program on it, there's not really much of a reason to avoid the upgrade to Sarge. I did a clean install on a Sun Ultra 10 a couple weeks ago; so far it's working great.
