Dave, is there no good way to allow the kernels to use the sun userspace keymap?
With our upcoming release in mind it may be a better idea to fix the kernel instead of hacking around it in userspace... Not sure which is better at this point as I'm not sure why the behavior was changed (there's a good reason, right? ;))
