Forgive me if I'm wrong here, the fact that in both these cases the images
were too big leads me to think maybe you are just trying to copy the files
themselves onto the media. In the case of the CD image, how are you
burning the image to CD? You need software that can burn an ISO image
(i.e. Easy CD Creator, Nero, ...etc). In the case of the floppy - are you
using dd in unix, or rawrite in DOS/Windows? Again with the floppy, you
can't just copy the file to the disk.
