help w/X etc.

Just loaded Debian GNU Linux version 2.2.17 on a SPARCstation 4 and
I'm getting the following errors when trying to start X.

507-->startx
X: exec of /usr/bin/X11/XF86_NONE failed
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 61
giving up.
xinit:  Connection refused (errno 61):  unable to connect to X server
xinit:  No such process (errno 3):  Server error.

Any help with resolving this and maybe just pointing me to general info
on getting this system up and useful would be much appreciated.
i.e. need to get ssh/scp/etc. working

SPARCstation 4
        Processor(s):   MicroSPARC II @ 70MHz
        Architecture:   sun4m
        Monitor:        onboard framebuffer,GDM-17E20 Color Graphics
        System Memory:  64 MEG
