FWIW dmfe.c is going to shrink very shortly.  2.5 is around the corner,
and it will start sharing code with other tulip clones, where possible. 
Doing so will automatically fix some of the issues you probably haven't
even hit yet.

(and if anyone is curious, dmfe is separate because it has differing
alignment and CRC constraints than general tulip, and supporting both
with one driver would slow down the main tulip)

In theory the main tulip is supposed to work with the most recent
DMFE's, but as we are seeing that doesn't appear to be the case...

Finally, are these dmfe boards available anywhere?  I would love to get
my hands on one, as I have no test cards that use this driver.
