Thanks for the reply Ben, but...

Left alone that I can't start X on that machine (I'll think about it
later), I've
Mar 27 08:40:27 etabeta /usr/sbin/gpm[15392]: oops() invoked from gpm.c(972)
Mar 27 08:40:27 etabeta /usr/sbin/gpm[15392]: /dev/sunmouse: No such device
in my logs. Here's what's in /dev
etabeta:/dev# ls -las sunmouse mouse psaux
0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 Mar 26 14:10 mouse -> psaux
0 crw------- 1 root root 10, 1 Nov 27 19:20 psaux
0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 Mar 21 15:36 sunmouse -> mouse
I guess at this point that the mouse is not compiled into this kernel...
In fact, I can't find it in /proc/devices.... Now the question is:
how is the mouse called in sun arch? is it the same psaux mouse as in
i386 ?
Next question will be about compiling the kernel, but I want to finish
setting up the common stuff before that....
Thank you
Pf
