Get a cross-cable to connect the machines and try minicom or seyon
on the i386. The default serial settings are, IIRC, 9600 8N1.
The sparc console defaults to serial if you unplug the keyboard..
(check out the mail archives and the Sparc install howto. You 
might also want to check www.netbsd.org and the Doc/Sparc sections)

With Debian you don't need bootparam. Rarp and tftp will be enough.
The potato netboot images etc. can be found at your local debian
mirror under potato/main/disks-sparc/current/sun4cdm.

To inspect the disk later, you will have to build a kernel with
UFS and sun disklabel support. (unless the install kernel has them...)

It's been a while since I did this stuff, so I might me wrong
in some details, but I hope you get the general idea ;)
