Ok, this is all the X stuff I have installed. See if something here makes a
difference for you.

ii  xserver-mach64  3.3.4-1        X server for ATI Mach64-based graphics cards
ii  xterm           3.3.4-1        X terminal emulator

You'll note I have much fonts here. Perhaps something is afoot in relation to that.
