Use unstable or testing, and apply security fixes yourself. Over
time, stable (with its historic software version) will drift
considerably from upstream, which will make security support
economically infeasible, so this is the only way that ensures you'll
have access to security fixes in a reasonable timeframe.
(This is not a Debian-specific problem, most distributors face the
same issues.)
