The router may die.

Setting up a failover config is a lot of pain and costs a lot of
money. Do you need it? Instead, have a second machine ready,
backups, a second switch, and prepare for an hour or two of
downtime.

Also, this is not a topic for debian-security, really.
debian-firewall, debian-user or maybe debian-isp.
