Sun 1.4 or better is fine.
Classpath 0.9x can run it too, but generally is slower, see [1].

Jmol really is contrib, it's GPL. Since it actually compiles and runs with
free Java tools, it could even be main already.

The deb packages for Jmol 10.00 can be downloaded from:
http://debian.wgdd.de/debian/
And Alioth java a subdir for Jmol, so the pkg-java project is looking into
it...
