The Plplot interface works pretty like the gnuplot one, after issuing
toggle_plplot_use. I was the maintainer of the PLplot package in Debian,
but I orphaned them some time ago:

Anyone interested in taking over the maintenance?
As regards Octaviz, you are right: mesh() won't work.
