The image generation plugin (libgvplugin-gd) is a hard dependency on the graphviz binary. I can put libgvplugin-pango to hard dependency as well for font and pdf usage, but it will still need to be addressed sooner or later which packages really need it.
If graphviz Depends: libgvplugin-pango resolves these dramas then please do it. A package using dot to make png shouldn't need to have to know to try to figure out which random backend engine graphviz is using to do it.
That might help fix pygraphviz too, since it Depends: graphviz. Drew
