No.  Probably, the previous maintainer know...

BTW, the pecl.php.net's tarballs are crazy enough itself (package.xml
file unpacks to the *current* directory).  May be that's reason.

Anyway, how to work around?  Should I change debian/rules to do manual
patching (e.g., with sed) or it's ok to keep current changeset as is?
