Well, it contains the package version and that the package was built for
Debian (so basically functions like a config.h). The information also
seems to be used for the user agent when requesting screenshots. For
most things, lsb_release is used instead.
You can't use /etc/debian_version to get reliable information, as even
on Ubuntu:
(lucid)jak@jak-thinkpad:/$ cat /etc/debian_version
squeeze/sid
While looking at the code to find out where version.py is used, I also
found another RC bug and fixed it (and thus changed subject).
software-center (2.0.7debian3) unstable; urgency=low
* Depend on lsb_release instead of recommending it; otherwise the program
does not start at all (because it calls lsb_release).
