Debian 5.0

I'd like to install Debian 5.0 (lenny), but I'm scared of these:

Security Advisories

[21 May 2009] DSA-1802 squirrelmail - several vulnerabilities
[20 May 2009] DSA-1804 ipsec-tools - null pointer dereference, memory leaks

[10 May 2009] DSA-1798 pango1.0 - integer overflow
[09 May 2009] DSA-1797 xulrunner - several vulnerabilities

I'm a newbie, and I don't know a lot of things to be able to do skillful things to prevent myself. What do you recommend on that? Thank you. Also, I'd like to learn more about Debian. Is there a good book that you could recommend to me, please? Thank you. Have a great day, and I will be waiting for your answer.
