how to resolve a bug?
Hello,
a few months ago I got an ADSL line. KPN, the biggest telecom in
the Netherlands supplied a speedtouch modem and I was pleasantly
surprised that debian sarge had a speedtouch-package to support
this modem. However, it took me days to get it installed properly.
After I figured out a solution, I wanted to share my findings for the
benefit of the debian community. So I submitted a bug report:
#237413: speedtouch depends on libatm1
Package: speedtouch
Version: 1.2-0beta3-1
Severity: normal
I needed to install package libatm1 to get my speedtouch 330 modem
working with package speedtouch, using the preferred setup with
kernel-drivers.
Also:
The default configuration example in doc/speedtouch/examples/peers-pppoa
did not work for me. After adding:
# my additions
holdoff 4
maxfail 25
updetach
it works perfectly, although i'm not sure if it is the best possible configuration.
I received this response from package-maintainer Marco d'Itri <md@Linux.IT>

See the README.Debian file of the ppp package. No bug here.
Some points arising:
1. The maintainer does recognize that speedtouch depends on libatm1, because
that
is stated in ppp's README.Debian (speedtouch needs the pppoatm.so plugin):
PPP over ATM plugin
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The ppp package does not explicitly depend on the libatm1 package.
This package needs to be installed for the pppoatm.so plugin to work.
2. The problem is not solved by this answer.
Just saying "not my responsibility" does not solve any problem.
So I was surprised to see the following header in the BTS:
Normal bugs - resolved (1 bug)
* #237413: speedtouch depends on libatm1
Package: speedtouch; Reported by: Paul B van den Berg <p.b.van.den.berg@farm.rug.nl>; Done: Marco > d'Itri <md@Linux.IT>; Will be archived: in 27 days.
I posted a follow up, but BTS still says: resolved.
3. It seems to be very easy for a maintainer to resolve a bug report, but
I did not find a possibility to reopen it.
4. The second part of my report is skipped.
Do you think that an average new debian user will easily come up
with some magic terms for pppd configuration? You can't go to
google and sourceforge if your modem doesn't work.
5. It would be very nice to have a configuration script for the speedtouch
package. I could contribute such a script, but the maintainer-response
does not encourage me.
Kind regards, Paul (not a subscriber to this list)
