install i386 potato/frozen (bugs?)

why doesn't potato recognize my processor, it says 'i686 Unkown'

download: debian.ssc.com

i choose the simple method to install the operating system and choose:

	gnome-apps
	x-windows server common

all the downloads are successful, and then configuration begins, and i get
the following error right way.

debconf: Perl may be unconfigured (Can't locate Getopt/Long.pm in @INC) (@INC
contains: usr/lib/perl5/5.005/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/5.005
/usr/local/lib/site_perl/i386-linux /usr/local/lib/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5 .)
at (eval 1) line 3.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at (eval 1) line 3.
) --aborting
E: Write Error - write (32 Broken pipe)
E: Failure running script dpkg-preconfigure --apt

what's up with it? isn't potato supposed to be on the fast track to the
stable/ directory? i don't think asking for the isntallation of X and
gnome should be that difficult. i haven't bothered, but shouldn't an
installation be able to install [A]ll applications, like it says. i bet
it wouldn't work.

but this complication between perl5 and debconf is yet to be fixed, and
keeps me from getting any further in testing out debian.

of course the simple installation method works if you select no program
group.
