I am not subscribed to this list and don't work for Debian QA. However,
I happened to read this thread.

perl_5.004.04-7 is a *slink* package (and simply named 'perl'). The
*potato* packages are perl-5.004_5.004.05-4.1 and perl-5.005_5.005.03-5.3
(note the perl version is part of the name) and both provide 'perl5'.
Potato packages that work with both 5.004 and 5.005 should depend on perl5
to make life easier for users relying on a specific perl version (there
are some incompatibilities between 5.004 and 5.005, most notably the dbm 
format).
