With both backends I get lots of windows flashing as they are mapped
and unmapped repeatedly. In the end I get a small icon window with
ctilde or some such character as bitmap (always  OK), a menu (shown
with both backends but the cairo one shows a large black polygonal
glitch obscuring most of the menu), and the main window which is
completely gray with cairo.
