This is very disturbing.  Could you please post the output of `Charmap
--GNU-Debug=dflt' on the console with both backends?

You can switch them with the same command, e.g.

defaults write NSGlobalDomain GSBackend lingnustep-art

will set the default art backend.

Thanks, I didn't know this.  My machine is Pentium 233 MHz, so I assumed
that every amd64 machine is a lot more powerful, no matter what.

In theory it could be an arch-specific bug (there was an ia64 bug in the
past that resembles your problem), but I can reproduce the behaviour you
initially described on i386 with the art backend.
