VSOP could be spelled out as "Versatile, Simple, Open, Popular" Well, I am more skeptical than before knowing it: AFAIK the Debian motto is "The Universal Operating System", which is in no way represented in your logo. Another advantage of the current situation (at least for the official "bottled" logo) is that the logo does not contain any other word except "debian" itself (agreed, there is a version without the word), thus the logo is not directly associated with the motto. I still think that for anything not "fully" formal and official the non-bottled logo is a better choice (everyone, DDs or not, can use it) and the plain swirl is already a very strong recognition sign.
