In a broader sense, the ability for proposers of ideas to take a straw poll in this manner could be valuable for getting an idea of what the general developer community thinks. In my experience of some lists, it seems that developers aren't willing to get drawn into a long discussion but might welcome an opportunity to say 'yes', 'work on it more' or 'no' and then get back to work. However, there are many contributors who aren't eligible to vote on GRs because they are not full DD yet, including me, yet the 'proposal' we're discussing affects us deeply too.
