This question is better directed at the end user oriented lists like 
debian-users (and the respective lists of the other distributions). 

Network card compatibility basically depends on the support by the Linux 
kernel which is more or less the same with all distributions of the same 
age. Most 100 Mbit/s PCI NICs are supported by the stock Linux kernel - so 
I expect no problems. 

Here in Austria most cheap cards are based on the Realtek 8139A (or B or C) 
chip which works well with all the current Linux distributions.
