Part of my issue with filing a bug report is which package to file the bug
report against, but it looks like it's perhaps a cups issue? Maybe it's an
xfce issue, since that's the DE I'm using, but I did try lxde and it does the
same thing. I have spent so much time on this already that I didn't want to
set up an account to file a bug report and try to figure out Debian's bugzilla
system, and then spend a bunch of time doing more trouble-shooting.

Thank you, I appreciate the assistance.

I performed the 'make uninstall' first, then I shut down my pc for the
evening and the next day I installed the c2esp package from the sid repo.
And yes, I just checked the /usr/lib/cups/filter directory and there is a
file called c2esp. Output from the ls -l command for that entry:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 83347 Aug 24 13:39 c2esp
(The reason it shows a date and time of this afternoon is probably because I
had removed the c2esp package in synaptic then built the c2esp 17 package
from sourceforge, before I got this reply.) That older version of c2esp is not
making a difference, I'm getting a slightly different but similar error when
I try to print. (see below)

I just installed colord (now that I know what it was about...) so that part
of the error isn't showing up anymore.

At this point I can't say for sure, and I hadn't previously looked to see if
the file existed because I assumed if the error said it wasn't available it
wasn't there.

With the previous (v17) driver installed, I'm now getting this
error:
[Job 3] printer-state-message="/usr/lib/cups/filter/c2esp failed"
[Job 3] printer-state-reasons=none
Now, I have just performed 'make uninstall' on the v17 driver, I'm going to
reinstall the c2esp 18-2 driver from the testing repo. Now
in /usr/lib/cups/filter there is a c2esp file:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 74504 Jun 17 13:03 c2esp
And I then modified the previously installed printer to point to a revised
driver, tried to print and got the same error as before that it failed. Do
you want me to re-enable the sid repo and install the 18-4 driver? It seems a
bit pointless but I can if you'd like...
