Ok.

It turns out that the hp-toolbox is part of the hplip package, 
discovered when I purged that one first, so I also purged hpoj and 
then put hplip back on.

The prior two twin entries still show up when starting xsane, but the 
hp-toolbox "scan" front end to xsane skips over the "select which 
one" completely and xsane comes up just fine.

Maybe hpoj and hplip packages can be set to conflict with each other 
some day.

Does now too. I'm surprised that the two entries still come up after 
the purge, but such is life.
