There's definitely some errors, some of it coming from the kernel usblp
module. But perhaps, that is just me power-cycling the printer.
For example:
Feb 13 13:59:52 localhost kernel: drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: nonzero read/write bulk status received: -2
Feb 13 13:59:52 localhost kernel: drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: error -2 reading from printer
Feb 13 14:00:08 localhost kernel: drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: error = -110 setting HP channel
Feb 13 14:00:34 localhost hpiod: unable to read uri:hp:/usb/ANY?device=/dev/usb/lp0 Device::DeviceID: Input/output error
Feb 13 14:00:53 localhost kernel: usb 5-1.3.1.1: USB disconnect, address 13
Feb 13 14:00:53 localhost kernel: drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: removed
Feb 13 14:01:05 localhost kernel: usb 5-1.3.1.1: new full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 14
Feb 13 14:01:05 localhost kernel: drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 14 if 0 alt 1 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x1D17
But the strange thing is, that I just rebooted to see if I could produce
a clean syslog. With just a print failure, and now I can't reproduce the
problem. I can use hp:/usb/hp_LaserJet_1320_series?device=/dev/usb/lp0
with the foomatic PPD and it just works even in high quality duplex.
So I can't reproduce the problem anymore.
(But cupsd does still spins in an infinite loop if I try to list the available
"HP (HPLID)" PPD's.)
I did a system upgrade this afternoon, including new versions of hal and
dbus, so it's possible that changed something. I have no idea what
though.

The permissions looked OK (before the reboot):
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 180, 0 2006-02-13 15:28 /dev/usb/lp0
