I find it easiest to remove any lines I want to change from .config and
run make oldconfig.

FWIW I have all of the above set to y in my .config.

IIRC I had problems with CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE, so I'm using
CONFIG_FIRMWARE_IN_KERNEL=y. YMMV.
