The original Apple AirPort Card (Hermes/Agere based) is supported by the
orinoco driver in mainline kernels.

This driver received WPA support (currently WPA1+TKIP only) in kernel
2.6.28-rc1.  Firmware is required to be provided, see
http://wiki.debian.org/orinoco for further details.

Looks like I'll probably just continue to use WEP until Lenny or the next stable release uses the proper kernel. Otherwise, I'll have to pin the kernel down. Also, the wiki didn't mention anything about network-manager which is what I would like to use for network connections, I could use /network/interfaces but my wife uses the laptop as well. So, I rely on network-manager. Thanks for the instructions.
