IME you won't be able to really enjoy any kind of HD (i.e. 720 or 1080)
content on a G4 800 MHz iBook.

That's kind of oversimplified, but generally I'd say that compiz should
basically work with the iBook you're considering, though it may be a
little tight depending on what exactly you're doing.

Altivec should help somewhat for video playback, but I wouldn't expect
any miracles from it.

Altivec doesn't help at all for this.
